Domestic Violence Advocacy Center (DVAC)

The Domestic Violence Advocacy Center (DVAC), begun in 1996, is a joint effort between the Legal Aid Society, the Forsyth County Bar, Wake Forest University and the Clerk of Court which provides support to victims of domestic violence.

Through DVAC and Legal Aid, law students are trained to represent domestic violence victims in both civil and criminal matters in the courtroom. These courtroom volunteers provide an invaluable service to victims of domestic violence seeking protective orders against their abusers.

DVAC supports Winston Salem’s battered women’s shelter by sending weekly volunteers to the shelter. On holidays, volunteers throw parties for the children of battered women staying at the shelter. And every spring, DVAC organizes a raffle to raise money for the shelter. In 2007, we donated over $1,500! DVAC also collects important items for the battered women’s shelter, including clothes and cell phones which can be extremely helpful in emergency situations.
