Associate Director, Public Interest Careers

Alvita Barrow serves as an Associate Director in the Office of Career and Professional Development and has more than three decades of experience in the public interest law field. Prior to joining Wake Forest, Alvita served for over 15 years as the managing director of Columbus Community Legal Services, the in-house civil litigation clinic at Catholic University’s law school in Washington, D.C. A graduate of Duke University and Cornell Law School, Alvita began her legal career as a staff attorney with the Legal Aid Society of Nassau County where she handled misdemeanor and felony cases on behalf of indigent individuals. She later joined the Office of the Public Defender in Rochester, New York, where she served as a trial attorney in the Violent Felony Section. Alvita’s legal experience also includes work as director of career services at George Mason University’s law school and work as a clearinghouse attorney on a Department of Justice grant-funded project with the National Legal Aid and Defender Association. She has also previously served on a number of nonprofit boards in Rochester, New York, and in Washington, D.C. Alvita’s legal education was a transformative experience for her and laid the foundation for the achievement of her professional goals as a lawyer.
