Message from Leadership Welcome to the first issue of the Legal Deacon Digest! Through this new, quarterly newsletter, you’ll be able to read about all of the exciting things going on in the Wake Forest Law community. The digest will include stories about our students, faculty, and alumni; upcoming alumni events; and other noteworthy news items. The digest format will allow you to get a broad look into the Wake Forest Law world, while also enabling you to take a deeper dive into the stories that are most interesting to you. As the new dean of Wake Forest Law, I’m proud to become part of such a vibrant and dynamic community. And all of you, our dedicated alumni, are integral to that community. Thank you for helping to make Wake Forest Law the special place it is. I look forward to the wonderful programming, initiatives, and events the year has in store for us. I hope you do too. Spotlights Alumni Wake Forest Law alum Patti Ramseur (’99) has been elected President of the North Carolina Bar Association (NCBA) and will serve as President of the North Carolina Bar Foundation. Wake Forest Law alum Kimberly Stogner (’86, JD ’94), member of the Law Board of Visitors and local attorney at Womble Bond Dickinson LLP, has been elected President-Elect of the NCBA. Wake Forest Law alumnus Raag Singhal (JD ’89) was recently featured on both Yahoo News and NPR for his ruling on Trump’s case against CNN. Wake Forest alum and Double Deac Cassandra Rich (’01, JD ’04) was elected president of the Monroe County Bar Association (MCBA). Wake Forest Law alum Julian Philpott (JD ’78) is a recent recipient of the I. E. Ready Award by the NC Community College System in recognition of his outstanding statewide contribution to the NC Community College System for 2022-2023. Wake Forest Law alum Doug Powell (JD ’80) was appointed to Susquehanna University’s Board of Trustees. Ron Black (JD ’72), Frank Robbins (JD ’72), and Dennis Salvagio (JD ’73) are recognized as Florida Bar 50-Year Members and Senior Counselors. Students Wake Forest Law alum Kaeli Czosek (’23) presented an oral argument in Raleigh to a panel of three North Carolina Court of Appeals judges in the case of State v. Minyard. Meet the Wake Forest Law Class of 2026! The Medical-Legal Partnership Clinic, one of Wake Forest Law’s seven clinics, recently worked with a local family to obtain adequate, affordable housing and regain their security deposit. Wake Forest Law 1Ls begin their law school journey by completing Foundations Week. Faculty Wake Forest Law Remembers Professor Ralph Peeples Enjoy the first video of our Expert Encounters Series with Professor Tim Davis! Cemetery Law-expert Tanya Marsh, who serves as the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and a Professor at Wake Forest Law, was recently quoted in an LA Times article regarding abandoned cemeteries. Criminal Law Professor Ron Wright shares his expertise in a Bloomberg Law article on how video conferencing recordings can benefit possible future investigations. Noteworthy Wake Forest Law Welcomes New Board Members The Wake Forest Law Office of Development and Alumni Engagement is pleased to welcome 29 new members joining the Law Board of Visitors, General Counsel Advisory Committee, and Rose Council for their three-year terms starting on July 1, 2023. These three boards meet regularly throughout the year to hear updates from Wake Forest Law leadership and use their legal, business, nonprofit, and community expertise to help the School of Law develop and implement its mission and goals. Wake Forest Law Welcomes New Dean Andrew R. Klein, a highly accomplished legal scholar and administrator recognized for his teaching and leadership, was named dean of Wake Forest Law. He spent the past 23 years at the IU McKinney School of Law where he focused on tort and environmental law. He also served as the law school’s dean from 2013-2020 and interim chancellor and executive vice president of IU Indianapolis from 2022-2023. Dean Klein assumed the role of dean of Wake Forest Law in July 2023.
