On June 19, 1865, Union troops arrived in Galveston Bay, Texas and announced that the more than 250,000 enslaved black people in the state were finally free by executive decree, over two years after the Emancipation Proclamation took effect. This day became known as “Juneteenth” to the newly freed people in Texas.
