For 25 years Steve Garland was a private attorney, first at Moore and Van Allen in Charlotte and then at Blanco Tackabery in Winston-Salem. He focused on commercial real estate, commercial financing and municipal law. In the municipal area, he represented the Forsyth County communities of Lewisville, Tobaccoville and Walkertown.
Steve obtained his undergraduate degree from Duke University. After working for the afternoon daily newspaper in Winston-Salem, he attended Wake Forest Law School where he was editor-in-chief of The Wake Forest Law Review. Upon graduation he clerked for North Carolina Supreme Court Chief Justice Joseph Branch. In civic affairs, he served as a member of the Citizens' Steering Committee for the Legacy comprehensive plan for Forsyth County. He is past president of the Little Theatre of Winston-Salem and a graduate of the Leadership Winston-Salem program.
