John Korzen, who heads the Appellate Advocacy Clinic and teaches Legal Writing and Business Drafting, is an experienced appellate lawyer.  John has been lead counsel in 23 appeals to the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals, argued 10 appeals to the Fourth Circuit, been lead counsel in 18 appeals to the North Carolina Court of Appeals, and participated in dozens of other federal and state appeals as co-counsel, consultant, or amicus.  In 2007, John was awarded the “Order of Service” by the North Carolina Academy of Trial Lawyers, for which he regularly teaches at Continuing Legal Education seminars and serves on the Legal Affairs Committee. Before joining the faculty in 2003, John practiced law with Anderson, Korzen & Associates, in Kernersville, NC and with Smith Helms Mulliss & Moore (now Smith Moore) in Greensboro, NC. He also served as a law clerk for the late Sam J. Ervin, III, then Chief Judge of the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit. Before attending law school, John taught grades 4 through 7 in the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County School System. John lives in Kernersville, NC with his wife Catherine and their three daughters, who are in grades 12, 8, and 6.
